Nordic Edge – Romanian collaboration on sustainable and climate-neutral cities
Over the past year, Nordic Edge has strengthened its collaboration with Romanian cities, organisations and urban innovation ecosystems through several complementary initiatives. As a project partner in M100 – Mirror Mission Cities Hub Romania and NORO Green Cities, and as a contributor to UrbanizeHub’s New Urban Habits events, Nordic Edge has supported knowledge exchange, capacity building and partnerships between Norway and Romania.
Together, these activities share a common ambition: accelerating the transition towards climate-neutral, sustainable and people-centred cities.

Visions and ambitions
Our shared ambition is to move beyond individual projects towards a long-term ecosystem for Norwegian-Romanian cooperation on sustainable cities.
Romanian cities are pursuing ambitious climate targets while addressing challenges related to mobility, energy, digitalisation, urban regeneration and quality of life. Norway has relevant experience in many of these areas, but the collaboration is not intended as a one-way transfer of solutions. The goal is mutual learning, where Romanian and Norwegian cities, companies and organisations can share approaches, test ideas and develop solutions together.

Why it matters
Cities are critical arenas for achieving Europe’s climate ambitions, but often face challenges in translating ambitious strategies into practical implementation.
For Romanian partners, the collaboration provides access to Nordic experience, networks and approaches. For Norwegian municipalities and companies, it provides insight into a rapidly developing European market and opportunities to establish partnerships around concrete urban challenges.
Just as importantly, these initiatives build relationships and trust. Workshops, study visits and events create connections that can continue beyond the lifetime of individual projects.
Connected to our other projects
The Romanian activities are closely connected to Nordic Edge’s wider work on climate-neutral cities, innovation ecosystems and public-private collaboration.
M100 connects particularly well with our involvement in the European Cities Mission and climate-neutral city transitions, while NORO links this agenda to innovation ecosystems and the scaling of smart and sustainable city solutions. New Urban Habits adds a broader community of urbanists, entrepreneurs, decision-makers and citizens.
Together, the initiatives also strengthen Stavanger and the Nordic Edge ecosystem as an international meeting point for sustainable urban development.
Looking ahead
The past year has provided a strong foundation for continued Norwegian-Romanian cooperation. Nordic Edge wants to build on the relationships established through M100, NORO and New Urban Habits and move towards more concrete collaboration between cities, companies and innovation environments.
Potential next steps include further knowledge exchange, joint project development, matchmaking between Romanian urban challenges and Nordic solutions, and participation in European and bilateral funding programmes.
Rather than viewing M100, NORO and New Urban Habits as separate activities, we see them as building blocks in a longer-term partnership between Norwegian and Romanian urban innovation ecosystems – with significant potential for new projects, partnerships and practical solutions for more sustainable and climate-neutral European cities.
