Workshop: Urban Living Lab an effective tool for social inclusive city transformation in the Nordics and China
This session analyses how urban living labs may be used as instruments of open innovation. The analysis is based on on-the-ground experiences with urban living labs in China (in the cities of Wuhan, Tianjin and Jingdezhen), in close interaction between local stakeholders with European and Chinese experts. These experiences were paired with desk research, local stakeholder workshops and Sino-European expert workshops, in order to better understand the challenges that were identified in the urban living labs, and to explore pathways towards solving these challenges. Based on these methods, open innovation-based principles are discussed for urban living labs to function as meeting arenas to support communities’ diversity, significance and connectedness, where participants can experiment with practical ideas and solutions towards more a cohesive, inclusive and sustainable every-day life.

Yu Wang is Senior Researcher at department of Architecture and Planning, NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology. His research is focusing on the fast urbanization and its impacts on urban inhabitants, heritage conservation and urban resilience. He also holds a part-time position at international affairs division at rector’s office for NTNU-China cooperation.

Bernhard Mueller is a senior professor at TU Dresden. Until mid 2019, he was the Director of the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER). His research interests are in sustainable development. Bernhard Mueller is the coordinator of the Horizon 2020 project TRANS-URBAN-EU-CHINA which runs until the end of 2020.

Annemie Wyckmans is the coordinator of CrAFt (Creating Actionable Futures, 2022-2025, HEU-funded), +CityxChange (2018-2023, H2020-funded) and the Joint Programme on Smart Cities of the European Energy Research Alliance. As Professor at NTNU, she is committed to making the transition to climate-neutrality irresistible – with cities and citizens.
Dr. Jianming CAI is a full professor at the Beijing Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Dr. Cai’s current research focuses on globalization and the spatial restructuring of China’s large cities with an emphasis on peri-urban development dynamics and metropolitan governance in those cities, as well as urban agriculture and sustainable city development, including integrated urban water management and agro-tourism in peri-urban China.
Associate Professor at Department of Urban Planning, School of Architecture, Tsinghua University
She has been the research fellow in London School of Economics and Political Science, University of Amsterdam, and Post-Doctor in School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tsinghua University. Her research interests include social planning in urban-rural planning, community planning & housing studies, sustainable urban regeneration, urban public space planning, etc.
Dr. Dirk Ahlers is a senior researcher and project manager of +CityxChange. He has a background in Computer Science and now works as a research manager with the Smart Sustainable Cities group of the Department of Architecture and Planning NTNU. His research interests are Urban Intelligence, Smart Cities, Climate Mitigation, Sustainability, Climate Neutral Cities, Open Innovation, Urban Systems Modeling, Geospatial Retrieval, Information Retrieval, Web Mining, Search Engines, Information Access, Mobile, and Everything Geo.
