Smart City Germany and the energy transition
Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI), the economic development agency of the Federal Republic of Germany, will present the latest developments in Germany’s energy transition and how you can participate.
German Smart Cities cope better and better with the increasing urban agglomeration and the new demands on housing, mobility, communication, climate neutrality or health. The German government has also called for an increase in the energy efficiency of buildings and industrial processes to reduce overall energy consumption. Digital solutions that address these challenges add value in all areas allowing new actors to participate in the German energy market.
Germany aims to be climate-neutral by 2045. That has big consequences for its cities. We need to change the way we move, how we heat and cool our buildings and how we generate our electricity. Germany has 48 million cars, Europe’s largest building stock and more than half of its power generation is non-renewable. So becoming climate-neutral is no small challenge. Cities will be a big part of the solution.
There is no shortage of cities in Germany: there are 81 with more than 100,000 residents, and it is here that smart approaches to the energy transition are being implemented apace.
From smart grids and neighbourhood power storage to serial renovation and industrial-scale heat recovery, Germany is implementing technological solutions rapidly. The government is funding the change with billions of euros, including 1 billion specifically for smart city solutions.

Robert supports international companies in setting up a presence in Germany and is the energy, building and environmental technologies team’s specialist for energy efficiency in buildings and industrial processes. In the last six years he has introduced businesses from different countries and a wide range of fields to the ins and outs of energy efficiency and doing business in Germany.
Tobias Rothacher is Deputy Director at Germany Trade and Invest’s (GTAI) Team for Energy, Environment & Resources. He has a special focus on Photovoltaics and Energy Storage technologies. GTAI is a consultancy wholly owned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Headquartered in Berlin, he and his colleagues advise international investors – from start-ups to larger corporations – in the field of Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Environmental Technologies in Germany. Prior to his position at GTAI, Rothacher worked as a Business Development and Project Development Manager for the Conergy Group in the Asia Pacific region. He has an academic background in Business Administration and Engineering and received his higher education in Germany and Canada.
Daniel has been with GTAI for eight years, having previously worked in England, the USA and South Africa. he holds an MBA from the University of Leicester.
Finance and Incentives is a part of GTAI’s Investor Support Services department, offering advice and data for macroeconomic considerations, information on Germany’s different regions, the German taxation system, employment aspects, legal administration and financing opportunities. All GTAI’s services are free of charge.
