Nordic Edge Expo

Workshop: Critical thinking for smart cities

This session aims at showcasing the research projects that are currently being developed by the PhD Research Fellows within the Smart City Research group at the University of Stavanger and initiating potential collaboration via focus group discussions with interested parties.

The session consists of an initial brief introduction on ongoing research at UiS regarding the topic of smart city, followed by in-depth theme-focussed workshops which are simultaneously executed in four sub-sessions, which individual attendees will be able to join, based on their interests. The four themes are:

  • Energy (Hassan Gholami & Sasanka N. Ranasinghe)
    • The first part of the session will focus on solar energy and its potential contribution toward energy transition in Europe with a focus on the cities. The second part of session will focus on building energy management system and secure energy exchange in the smart city.
  • Integrated urban planning (Maria Korkou & Todor Kesarovski)
    • The session will discuss ideas on how to enhance sustainability and liveability in the context of smart cities. The focus areas of research that will frame the debate are the assessment of green infrastructure’s multifunctionality and optimal built environment’s densities in respect to urban services.
  • Partnerships in smart cities (Veronika Budovska, Xiangyu Quan & Johana Montalvan Castilla)
    • The session will focus on integrating actors at all levels into smart city development. Children, citizens, practitioners, and policymakers are all essential players in smart cities. Let’s discuss the role of partnerships and collaborations in urban transitions.
  • The role of 5G & AI in enhancing the safety & security of the smart cities (Viktoria Gierukas & Ali Gohar)
    • The first part of the session will focus on the importance of Safety and Security in the Smart Cities, during which the possibilities on staying a step ahead against physical threats will be highlighted. The second part of session will focus on managing and orchestrating the 5G networks using artificial intelligence. In the end these two perspectives will be adapted to a real-world scenario.
